Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio Subtitles — How to Add Captions to Twitch Studio

March 2026 · 5 min read · By StreamTranslate Team

Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio is Twitch's official streaming application, designed specifically for new and beginner streamers who want to start broadcasting without the complexity of OBS. It comes pre-configured for Twitch with optimized settings, a visual editor, and built-in alert integrations. But it doesn't include real-time subtitles or translation — and that's a significant gap. StreamTranslate adds live captions to Twitch Studio through its browser source functionality, which works identically to OBS.

Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok's Built-In Captions vs. StreamTranslate

Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok launched automated captions in beta for viewers — but there's a critical difference. Twitch's viewer-side captions require each viewer to manually enable them in their settings, and they're not available in all regions or for all browsers. They also can't be translated into other languages. StreamTranslate's overlay is embedded in your actual stream — every viewer sees the subtitles automatically, just like any other overlay element on your screen.

For streamers focused on growing their channel, an always-on subtitle overlay is far more effective than opt-in viewer captions. See our post on how captions help you reach Twitch Affiliate faster.

Adding Subtitles to Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio

1

Create your overlay in StreamTranslate

Log in at streamtranslate.live/control. Choose your input language (typically English) and the translation language (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese). Click Generate Overlay URL and copy the link.

2

Open Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio and go to your scene

Launch Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio. In the scene editor, select your main scene (the one you stream from most). Click the + button in the editor to add a new source.

3

Add a Browser Source

From the source type list, select Browser Source. In the URL field, paste your StreamTranslate overlay URL. Set width to 1920 and height to 1080. Click Save.

4

Resize to fill the scene

In the Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio visual editor, click on the browser source layer. Drag the corners to fill the entire scene canvas (1920×1080). The subtitle overlay is transparent everywhere except where text appears, so it won't block your gameplay or facecam.

5

Test before going live

Use Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio's Preview Mode (click the camera icon) to preview your stream. Speak into your microphone — subtitles should appear within 2 seconds at the bottom of your preview.

Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio tip: Add the browser source to every scene by repeating the Add Source process in each scene. Twitch Studio doesn't have a "global source" feature like OBS scene collections, so you'll need to add it individually to each scene you use.

Positioning Subtitles in Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio

Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio's visual editor makes it easy to position the subtitle layer. Since the overlay is full-screen (1920×1080) and transparent, you don't need to resize it — just make sure it's at the top of the layer stack. Right-click the source → Bring to Front to ensure subtitles render above your gameplay, facecam, and other overlays.

Going from Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio to OBS

Many streamers start with Twitch Studio and eventually migrate to OBS for more advanced control. When you make that switch, StreamTranslate works identically in OBS — the same overlay URL works in both apps. See our OBS setup guide for detailed instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio support browser sources?

Yes. Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio supports browser sources just like OBS. You can add a StreamTranslate overlay URL as a browser source in any Twitch Studio scene.

Does Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok have built-in captions for streamers?

Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok has a beta automated captions feature for viewers, but it requires viewers to enable it manually. StreamTranslate adds a visible overlay that all viewers see without any action on their part.

Can I use StreamTranslate with Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio if I stream on mobile?

StreamTranslate works with Twitch, YouTube, X, and TikTok Studio on desktop (PC and Mac). Mobile streaming apps do not support browser sources, so StreamTranslate is not compatible with mobile-only Twitch apps.
