Viewer Guide
For Twitch Viewers
How Twitch Viewers
Get Subtitles
Watching a Twitch stream and want subtitles? Here's how it works โ and how streamers can turn on real-time subtitles for all their viewers in 30+ languages.
How Viewers Get Subtitles on Twitch
Twitch does not have built-in automatic subtitles for live streams. To get subtitles on a Twitch stream, the streamer must install a subtitle extension like StreamTranslate. Here's how it works:
- The streamer installs StreamTranslate from the Twitch Extensions Marketplace
- When the streamer is live with StreamTranslate active, a CC / Subtitles button appears in the Twitch player for all viewers
- Viewers click the button, choose their language, and subtitles appear in a panel in real-time
- Viewers can toggle subtitles on/off and change language at any time โ independently of other viewers
If the streamer doesn't have StreamTranslate installed, there are no real-time subtitles available for that stream.
What Viewers See: The Subtitle Experience
When StreamTranslate is active on a Twitch channel, viewers see a new icon in the Twitch player toolbar โ similar to a CC (closed captions) button. Here's the viewer experience:
- Click the CC/Subtitles button in the player
- A language selector appears โ choose your language (Spanish, French, Japanese, etc.)
- A subtitle panel opens below or beside the video (depending on your layout)
- As the streamer speaks, new subtitle lines appear in real-time
- Old lines fade out automatically โ the panel stays clean
- You can resize, reposition, or close the subtitle panel at any time
For Viewers: What Languages Are Available?
StreamTranslate supports 30+ languages for viewers. The available languages depend on which languages the streamer has enabled, but most streamers allow all supported languages. Common viewer languages include:
- Spanish (Latin America and Spain)
- Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal)
- French, German, Italian, Dutch
- Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
- Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Russian
- Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and more
Do Viewers Need to Install Anything?
No โ viewers do not need to install anything. The StreamTranslate extension is installed by the streamer on their Twitch channel. When you visit a channel where it's active, the subtitle panel is available automatically in your Twitch player.
You don't need a StreamTranslate account. You don't need a browser extension. You don't need to download any software. Just click the CC button in the Twitch player and choose your language.
For Viewers: My Favorite Streamer Doesn't Have Subtitles โ What Can I Do?
If your favorite streamer doesn't have StreamTranslate installed, the best thing to do is tell them about it. Here's what you can share:
- StreamTranslate is a free Twitch extension that gives every viewer subtitles in their language
- It takes less than 5 minutes to set up
- Viewers don't need to install anything โ it works automatically once the streamer activates it
- Send them this link: streamtranslate.live or the Twitch extension page
For Streamers: How to Give Your Viewers Subtitles
If you're a streamer reading this because your international viewers or accessibility-minded community has asked for subtitles, here's the quick version:

- Step 2: Create your account at streamtranslate.live
