Live Stream Translation — Real-Time Subtitles for Any Stream

StreamTranslate converts your spoken audio into translated subtitles on screen, in real time, during a live broadcast — with 1.5–2.5 second latency and support for 50+ source languages.

What Is Live Stream Translation?

Live stream translation converts spoken audio into written subtitles in a different language, in real time, during a live broadcast. Unlike pre-recorded video subtitles — which can be manually reviewed and corrected before publishing — live streams happen in the moment. The translation system must process speech, convert it to text, translate it, and display it on screen within 1–3 seconds.

StreamTranslate does exactly this via a browser source overlay that loads inside OBS, Streamlabs, or any broadcasting software that supports browser sources. There's no separate application to run, no audio routing workarounds, and no post-processing step. The subtitles appear live, on your stream, as you speak.

This technology matters because language is the single biggest barrier to building a global audience. A streamer with 10,000 English-speaking viewers might have 500,000 potential viewers in Brazil or Japan who can't follow the content. Live translation removes that barrier without requiring the streamer to speak a second language.

How It Works

The process runs in four steps, each happening within a fraction of a second:

  1. Audio capture: StreamTranslate captures your microphone or desktop audio through the browser source, which has access to the audio context in your broadcasting software.
  2. Speech-to-text: The audio is sent to a speech recognition engine that transcribes what you said into text in your source language.
  3. Translation: If you've selected a target language different from your source, the transcript is passed through a translation engine that converts it to the target language in real time.
  4. Subtitle display: The translated text appears in the browser source overlay, positioned on your stream canvas however you've customized it — lower third, top bar, or anywhere else.

Total end-to-end delay: 1.5–2.5 seconds from when you finish a phrase to when the subtitle appears on screen. That's low enough that viewers can follow a natural conversation without the subtitle feeling like it belongs to a different moment.

Quick Stats

Platforms Supported

StreamTranslate works on any live streaming platform where you use OBS Studio or Streamlabs as your broadcast software. The overlay is just a browser source — the destination platform is irrelevant to how it functions.

If you can add a browser source in your streaming software and go live, StreamTranslate will work with it.

Languages Supported

StreamTranslate supports 50+ languages for speech recognition (source language detection) and 100+ languages for translation output. The most commonly used language pairs include:

In practice, any combination of the 50+ source languages and 100+ target languages is available. If you speak a language and want to subtitle in a different language, it's very likely supported.

How StreamTranslate Compares to Alternatives

Human interpreterYesAnyManual setup$100+/hour
YouTube auto-translateNo (VOD only)LimitedNoFree
OBS captions pluginYesEnglish onlyYesFree
StreamTranslateYes50+ source / 100+ targetYesFree tier available

Manual human translators are the gold standard for accuracy but are cost-prohibitive for live streaming at scale. YouTube's built-in auto-translation only works on recorded VODs, not live broadcasts. OBS caption plugins provide captions in the source language only — no translation. StreamTranslate is the only option that combines real-time performance, multi-language translation, and a stream-native overlay in one tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware do I need to use live stream translation?

You need a microphone, a computer running OBS Studio or Streamlabs OBS, and a stable internet connection (5+ Mbps upload recommended). No special hardware is required — any USB or XLR microphone works.

Does live stream translation work without OBS?

StreamTranslate is delivered as a browser source overlay, which requires OBS Studio, Streamlabs OBS, or any broadcasting software that supports browser sources. If you stream directly from a mobile app without desktop software, the overlay cannot be added at this time.

Can I translate both my voice and a guest's voice?

Yes. As long as both voices are routed through the same audio input that OBS is capturing, StreamTranslate will transcribe and translate all speech it hears. For best results, ensure both microphones feed into a single OBS audio track.

Does live stream translation work on mobile streams?

The browser source overlay requires desktop broadcasting software like OBS. Mobile-only streaming apps (IRL streaming via phone, for example) do not currently support adding overlays through StreamTranslate.

How much latency does live stream translation add?

StreamTranslate typically delivers subtitles 1.5 to 2.5 seconds after speech ends. This is low enough that viewers can follow a conversation naturally. Latency can increase slightly on slower internet connections or with less common language pairs.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. StreamTranslate offers a free tier that lets you test the overlay, try supported languages, and stream with translated subtitles. Paid plans unlock unlimited usage and additional language pair options. No credit card is required to start.

How accurate is the live translation?

Accuracy depends on microphone quality, background noise levels, and how clearly you speak. For major language pairs like English to Spanish or Japanese to English, accuracy is high enough for natural comprehension. Speaking at a moderate pace and using a directional microphone significantly improves results.

Does StreamTranslate store or share my audio?

Audio is processed in real time to generate subtitles and is not permanently stored. StreamTranslate does not sell or share your audio data with third parties. See the privacy policy on the main site for full details.
