Privacy policy
This policy describes the StreamTranslate.live — Live Chat Translator browser extension, not our separate captioning or video products.
Information the extension handles
- Chat and draft text: message text from supported public chat containers on Twitch, Kick, YouTube and X broadcasts and the reply draft you choose to translate. The extension displays translations and replaces a draft only after your translation action; it does not click Send or post a message for you.
- Page context: the current supported page path/channel or broadcast identifier is used locally to apply translation state and any saved channel pauses. This is not sent as a separate translation field. The extension does not collect a general browsing history.
- Preferences: translation and interface languages, on/off state, display settings, excluded languages, excluded words and patterns, channel pauses, and the reply target language.
The extension does not request your platform passwords or authentication cookies, record audio or video, or deliberately extract username labels, badges or emote images. Incoming lines identified as whispers are skipped. These filters are not an anonymization guarantee: a name, email address, sensitive detail or other identifying text written inside a message or draft may still be sent. Do not use draft translation for confidential information.
X support is limited to broadcast chat, not timelines or direct messages. YouTube support runs inside the live-chat frame. The extension may load on broader platform pages to detect navigation, but only processes supported chat containers.
What is sent to Google
Requests go over HTTPS to clients5.google.com/translate_a/t. The request URL contains the text to translate, source language (or automatic detection), target language and a fixed client identifier. Matching HTTP/HTTPS links, @mentions and your configured word/pattern exclusions are replaced with placeholders before transmission and restored locally afterward. Other text is not automatically redacted. Excluded-language settings hide translations after processing; they do not prevent that language’s text from being sent to Google.
The request omits credentials and the page referrer and asks the browser not to cache the response. Google necessarily receives your IP address and normal network/request metadata; these settings do not make the request anonymous or prevent provider logging. Text in the request URL may be retained in provider or diagnostic logs.
Google's handling of information is described in its Privacy Policy. We have not verified route-specific retention periods, deletion guarantees, processing locations or restrictions on secondary use for this endpoint. We cannot promise that Google deletes text immediately, never retains it, or never uses it to improve services. This extension does not use the authenticated Google Cloud Translation API.
Local storage, optional sync and retention
Preferences are saved in the extension's local browser storage. Sync is off by default. If you enable it, selected preferences—including excluded words and patterns—are copied through your browser's sync service, subject to your browser/account settings. In Chrome, that service is provided by Google. Enabling sync can first import an existing saved preference set. Do not put secrets in exclusions if you enable sync.
Your first-use consent, chat text, reply drafts, translations, channel pauses, the reply target language and session counters are not included in that synced preference set. Turning sync off stops this extension's future sync updates/imports on that device; it does not delete a previously saved sync copy.
Recent source text and translation results are held in service-worker memory, with up to 500 cached entries. Cached results may be reused for ten minutes. That is a reuse window, not a deletion timer: entries can remain until replaced, evicted or the worker ends. Pending work and per-page translation state also exist temporarily in memory. The extension does not write a persistent chat-history database or send analytics or crash reports to StreamTranslate.
Your controls
- Turn automatic translation off in the extension popup to stop new automatic requests. Requests already sent cannot be recalled. The separate reply Translate button still sends a draft when clicked.
- Change or remove preferences in Settings. “Reset all settings” restores defaults, removes the saved reply target and requests removal of the synced preference copy. Other devices keep existing local copies and may later sync them again. Reset requires you to enable translation again before new requests are sent.
- Reset is not a cache purge. Close supported chat tabs and disable the extension to stop its running page/worker state. Uninstall to remove the extension and its local storage; manage any remaining browser-sync data through your browser/account controls.
- Local controls cannot erase requests already received by Google. See Google's privacy information for its data controls.
Purpose and limited use
StreamTranslate uses information handled by this extension only to provide live chat and reply translation and the associated settings. We do not sell this data, use it for advertising or credit decisions, or send it to data brokers. StreamTranslate personnel do not receive chat text or drafts through the extension. Necessary translation transfers go directly to Google; optional preference transfers go through browser sync.
Other services and availability
Links to other StreamTranslate products open only when clicked. Those websites and supported streaming platforms operate under their own policies. This static policy file contains no analytics, scripts, remote fonts or embedded third-party content; the website hosting it may have its own server logging.
This extension uses an unauthenticated translation route with no paid fallback. Translation can fail or be limited. This policy describes data handling; it is not evidence that Google has authorized this route for public third-party distribution, or that Google or any supported streaming platform endorses the extension.
