Definition
Live subtitles are text captions that are generated and displayed in real time during a live broadcast — as opposed to pre-rendered subtitles added in post-production.
For live streamers, live subtitles typically come in two forms: same-language transcription (showing what the streamer is saying) and translated subtitles (showing the speech in a different language).
How Live Subtitles Are Generated
- Your microphone audio is streamed to an AI Speech-to-Text service
- The STT model transcribes your speech in milliseconds
- The transcript is optionally translated to a target language
- The text is sent to your stream overlay and displayed in real time
- Total pipeline from speech to visible subtitle: under 500ms
Benefits of Live Subtitles for Streamers
- Accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers
- Translated subtitles reach non-native speakers of your language
- Viewers in sound-restricted environments can still follow your stream
- Live subtitles improve viewer retention and watch time
- Search engines can index captioned content better
