When Stream Closed Captioner fits
Stream Closed Captioner’s official site describes free basic captions and enhanced translation unlocked through Bits. The broadcaster installs and activates the Twitch channel extension and starts captioning. This is a Twitch extension, rather than a Chrome add-on installed by each viewer. Its current documentation also describes an OBS WebSocket feature for captions in recordings; that is distinct from the live extension overlay. Do not assume a fixed $10–$15 monthly subscription or use an old language count as a current limit.
When StreamTranslate fits
Choose StreamTranslate when you want hosted speech processing, an OBS or Streamlabs Browser Source, or its broadcaster-enabled Twitch extension. The live-caption product supports 65 target languages; the separate video/VOD subtitle tool supports 60. Recognition support and capture methods depend on the source language and setup. In browser-microphone mode, keep Control open, select the intended mic, start the caption session and rehearse. The optional OBS audio plugin is separate from the visual Browser Source.
StreamTranslate’s official Twitch extension is enabled by the broadcaster: install and activate it on the channel, link the caption session and supply audio. Each viewer can choose a caption language. Viewers do not install a Chrome add-on. This does not translate an arbitrary channel that has no broadcaster setup, and it does not translate typed chat. An OBS/Streamlabs Browser Source is a separate output: its captions become part of the video, so all viewers see the selected overlay language. A native CC track is another integration.
Compare expected usage and plan features
The Free Plan includes 3 active hours every month. For 30 active caption hours in a month, StreamTranslate Starter’s regular monthly price plus five overage hours totals $19.99 ($14.99 + 5 × $1). Pro is $34.99 with 50 included hours and two overlay languages. Three $12 Stream Pass purchases provide 36 active hours for $36, with unused hours saved. This compares hours and price only; plan features differ. There is no like-for-like Stream CC total here because its translation purchase uses Bits and the current terms must be checked.
Compare with your real speech
Use the same microphone, source language, target language and sample speech in each tool. Include names and gaming terms you actually say. Record under your normal OBS workload, compare missing words and translation meaning, then check scene changes, capture stop/restart and viewer controls. We have not measured a controlled speed, accuracy or CPU-use winner.

Questions before choosing
Is Stream CC English-only?
Its official site offers enhanced translation through Bits. Check its current language choices rather than treating it as English-only.
Is either service a viewer-only Chrome extension?
Both Twitch channel-extension workflows require broadcaster setup. StreamTranslate also has a separate OBS/Streamlabs Browser Source output. Neither description means viewers can translate arbitrary channels without broadcaster cooperation.
