Choose a caption service with a verified room-display output, connect it to the intended screen and rehearse from the congregation’s seats. Keep personal-device access as an optional supported route rather than the only assumption. StreamTranslate’s broadcast documentation is not proof of a released in-room presentation app.
Draw the room display route
Identify the computer generating or displaying captions and the projector, monitor or video system receiving its output. Decide whether captions share the main slides, occupy a separate display or appear on personal devices. Each choice changes sight lines and the amount of information people must follow.
If a separate display is available, place it where readers can still see the speaker. If captions share a screen with slides, reserve space deliberately. Do not make the audience choose between a scripture reference hidden by subtitles and the words being spoken about it.
Check what the computer is actually sending
Distinguish the operator display from the audience display. With an extended desktop, dragging a window to the wrong screen can leave the audience looking at a blank background. With mirroring, notifications or operator controls may appear publicly. Use the display mode appropriate to the chosen software and rehearse it.
Test the cable or wireless display connection that will be used during the service, including any switcher. A browser page that works on the laptop can be clipped, scaled or obscured farther down the chain. Confirm the final image after the presentation slides are also open.
Assess readability from real seats
- Show a passage with a long sentence, a short sentence and a speaker pause.
- Read it from the back and side seating areas.
- Check contrast against both dark and bright slide backgrounds.
- Confirm the text stays clear when the room lighting changes.
- Ask intended caption users whether the placement and pace are usable.
A photograph taken near the screen is not a substitute for this check. Avoid fitting more words by shrinking the type until it becomes comfortable only for the operator.
Include every spoken part of worship
Check the lectern, handheld microphones, guest speaker and announcement position. Decide how questions or congregational responses reach a microphone. If the caption service hears only one close microphone, it cannot reliably reconstruct a person speaking from an unamplified seat at the back.
Prepare a short list of religious terms, names and readings for rehearsal. Services such as Aberdeen’s in-person offering describe room and personal-device caption routes. When evaluating any provider, ask it to demonstrate your proposed audio-to-screen connection rather than relying on a general demo video.
Keep a room fallback and a separate broadcast plan
Decide what the operator should do if captions stop: display a simple availability message, notify the support person and follow the tested recovery steps. Keep essential prepared text available through the existing presentation system where appropriate. Do not silently leave an old caption on screen as though it describes the current speaker.
A remote livestream may use a different caption route from the sanctuary. StreamTranslate’s published OBS and YouTube guides can inform that broadcast setup, but neither automatically verifies the in-room display. Test the two audiences independently before announcing both as supported.
Quick answers
Can a website show captions on a projector?
A computer can display a supported browser output on a connected screen. The service still needs a suitable audience view, and the complete display path must be rehearsed.
Must everyone use a QR code?
No. A shared screen, a supported direct link and assisted access are possible planning choices. Offer routes that match the congregation and the service you select.
Is StreamTranslate’s presentation desktop app available from this guide?
No released presentation-app workflow is claimed here. Use its documented broadcast routes only where those fit, and verify any separate room product before relying on it.
