Android app selection

Choose an Android caption app for the audio you use

An app-store search can return tools for conversations, videos, calls and streaming, all under the word captions. Before installing one, decide what speech you want it to hear and where the text needs to appear. A phone app that captions your own screen is not automatically a tool for publishing subtitles to viewers.

Evaluate a caption app with a short sample from your actual source and language pair. Check device support, permissions, readable output and trial limits. Use StreamTranslate’s documented IRL routes when the goal is captions for a broadcast audience rather than a private Android overlay.

Write a one-sentence requirement

Useful examples are: I want to read a conversation beside me; I want translated subtitles for a video playing on this phone; or I want people watching my phone stream to see captions. Each requires a different input and output combination.

Decide whether you need transcription in the original language or translation into another one. Also decide whether the text must remain above another app, work in landscape or be visible on a separate audience device. This small checklist will eliminate more unsuitable apps than comparing download counts.

Read the listing as a set of claims to test

The linked Live Caption & Translation listing describes screen captions, language translation and appearance controls. Those are developer claims to evaluate on your own device, not proof that every app, language or protected video will work.

Read the developer identity, supported requirements, pricing and data-handling information before granting access. Check what a requested permission is intended to do. If the app relies on screen or audio capture, understand what you are sharing. Use ordinary sample material for a trial rather than a private meeting or personal call.

Run a small app trial with clear pass conditions

  1. Play a short speech sample you know well.
  2. Select the exact language pair you want to use.
  3. Check whether the original words are recognized before judging translation.
  4. Switch to the target app and test full-screen or landscape viewing.
  5. Pause, resume and confirm new text follows the new speech.
  6. Stop the app’s capture and verify that its listening state ends.

Write down the failure if it misses a requirement. “No audio from this app” is different from “wrong translation” or “text covers playback controls,” and each can lead you to a different product choice.

Compare the total experience, not a headline price

Review what happens after the free allowance or trial ends. Determine whether the charge is for time, translation, a subscription or another unit. Confirm how cancellation works before relying on a tool for recurring use.

Test text size and contrast at the distance you normally hold the phone. A fast-looking demo is not helpful if the display covers the speaker’s face or important game information. Avoid assuming that a high store rating answers your particular language, device and audio-source requirements.

Choose a streaming workflow when the audience is remote

If other people need to read your broadcast, inspect StreamTranslate’s supported phone and OBS receiver paths. The phone supplies speech through the chosen route; captions then appear through the Twitch extension or a supported video overlay. StreamTranslate is not presented here as a native Android app that captures every other app.

Use a separate viewer device to verify delivery. A local caption box on the broadcaster’s screen proves only local display. Test the end-of-stream stop controls too, because closing a visible caption panel may not stop a separate audio connection.

Quick answers

Are Android caption apps all translating speech?

No. Some transcribe the original language, some translate text or audio, and some only display captions. Check the input, output and exact language pair.

Is an app-store listing proof it works with every video app?

No. Test the source you actually use, including full-screen behavior and audio capture. Protected media or device restrictions may limit access.

Does StreamTranslate have the same cross-app Android overlay?

This guide does not claim that feature. StreamTranslate’s documented mobile workflow sends supported IRL audio to caption outputs for an audience.
