Browser caption tool guide

Turn browser microphone speech into live captions.

A browser can be the capture device for a live caption session. You still need to choose the microphone, allow access, select the speech language and decide where the text should appear. The caption preview and the audience’s screen are separate checkpoints.

By StreamTranslate · Updated

Open StreamTranslate Control, choose Your microphone and the intended input, set your spoken and subtitle languages, then start capture. Keep Control open. Use a configured Twitch extension, Browser Source or YouTube caption feed when the text must reach an audience.

Get a useful first result

  1. Connect the headset or microphone you intend to use before opening the capture controls.
  2. Sign into StreamTranslate and open Control.
  3. Select the microphone and grant the browser permission when requested.
  4. Choose the language you will speak and the caption language you want to read.
  5. Start capture and say a normal sentence, followed by a short pause.

Check that new text follows your voice, rather than sound from a nearby speaker or an unintended laptop microphone. Use headphones when monitoring another audio source. Start with a single clear speaker so that input problems are easier to recognize.

Send captions somewhere people can actually see

For your own Twitch broadcast, activate and link the StreamTranslate extension so viewers can choose their caption language. For visible text in OBS or compatible streaming software, copy the Browser Source URL and add it to the intended scene. For native YouTube CC, connect the matching broadcast’s caption URL in Control.

A browser caption tool is not automatically an audience-sharing system, a native meeting integration or a desktop presentation overlay. Maestra’s captioner page describes its own sharing and integration options; do not assume those options exist in every browser tool. Use the documented StreamTranslate destination that matches your session rather than sharing private Control access with attendees.

Distinguish microphone speech from playing media

Your microphone mode captures the selected input device. It is appropriate for you speaking, but it is a poor substitute for directly sharing a playing browser tab. Holding a microphone near computer speakers adds room sound and can mix your conversation into the result.

For permitted content playing in a desktop tab, Elite Watch Party uses the browser’s tab-audio sharing dialog instead. Choose Tab and enable Share tab audio; captions appear in Control. The free Chat Translator handles written messages and reply drafts, not microphone recognition. For a saved video file, use the separately billed Video/VOD Translator rather than playing an entire recording into the microphone.

Fix permission, source and stopping problems

If the preview stays empty, verify permission for this site and inspect the selected device. A headset connected after the page opened may require selecting its input. If the wrong language appears, check the spoken-language setting before changing the output language. If a translation seems implausible, inspect the source wording and reduce overlapping speech.

Keep the capture tab open throughout the session and use End Stream in Control when finished. Hiding the captions does not replace stopping their input. The Free Plan includes three active streaming hours monthly with a card required and no subscription charge; review current allowances before a long test. Browser capture and cloud processing require a working connection, and automated text still needs review for important statements.

Quick answers

Is this an anonymous unlimited caption demo?

No. StreamTranslate’s live workflow uses your account and plan. Its Free Plan has a monthly allowance; the setup guide should not be mistaken for an unlimited anonymous trial.

Can I use it without installing OBS?

Yes, browser microphone capture itself does not require OBS. The audience output must still fit your destination, such as the channel extension or YouTube caption connection.

Why can I see captions but my audience cannot?

The preview proves speech reached the caption session. Check the separate delivery setup: channel activation, Browser Source in the active scene or the correct YouTube event URL.
