Install and activate StreamTranslate CC as a video overlay, link your StreamTranslate account to the intended Twitch channel, then connect your microphone or supported streaming audio. Viewers use the extension to choose their own caption language.
Install, configure and activate the same channel
- Open the official StreamTranslate extension listing through the streamer setup page.
- Install it in your Twitch Creator Dashboard.
- Open Configure and sign in to StreamTranslate.
- Check the linked Twitch channel carefully, especially if you manage more than one account.
- Activate the extension as a video overlay in Twitch.
Installation and activation are separate. An extension saved in your dashboard may still be inactive on the public player. Likewise, signing into the wrong Twitch account can make an otherwise healthy caption session belong to another channel.
Choose the speech input that matches your setup
For desktop microphone capture, open Twitch setup or Control, choose your microphone, allow access and start the caption session. Keep the capture page open. This starts captions; your Twitch video broadcast starts separately in your streaming software.
If OBS already carries the desired audio, use the StreamTranslate filter on that source. Copy its key from Control’s Cloud OBS / OBS plugin route and keep the browser microphone off. For supported phone apps, follow the app-specific IRL instructions for an additional destination or an OBS receiver. Do not replace your normal Twitch video destination.
Set the language you speak, then check the preview
Choose the language actually being spoken so the source transcript is meaningful. Read a complete sentence, pause and continue. The original preview should match that speech before you ask someone to assess a translation.
A caption session receiving background television or a game’s dialogue may appear active while transcribing the wrong material. Compare the microphone or OBS source meter with your voice. Keep one capture route for the intended speech. Do not start a browser microphone simply because the extension is blank if the OBS filter already supplies that same voice.
Verify the viewer experience independently
Open the live channel in a second viewer window. Find StreamTranslate’s language control and select a different caption language from your own test view. Speak a new sentence and confirm the selections stay independent. Ask a fluent reader to review a short example when you cannot judge the target language.
Check timing against the actual Twitch video, not only the Control preview. The extension’s delay can be adjusted in Twitch setup to match the broadcast. A fixed delay will not repair incorrect audio capture or guarantee the same result in every player, so use the destination view as your reference.
Prevent overlapping text and stop cleanly
The extension, a Browser Source rendered into the video and Twitch’s native CC track are different outputs. Decide which ones you want. If you enable several, position and test them independently so a viewer does not receive multiple lines covering the same area.
At the end, stop the capture route you used. End the browser session in Control, pause the OBS filter, or stop the StreamTranslate destination in the phone app. Disabling the visible extension alone is not a reliable way to stop audio. Include this step in your normal end-of-stream checklist.
Quick answers
Does the extension start listening as soon as I install it?
No. It displays captions supplied by your connected StreamTranslate audio session. You must also link the correct account and activate the extension.
Do I choose one language for all viewers?
You choose the spoken input language. Each viewer chooses their own extension caption language; a separate Browser Source overlay uses the output you configure.
Does this add native Twitch CC?
No. The extension has its own caption layer and controls. A compatible encoder-caption workflow supplies Twitch’s native CC track separately.
