Browser extension guide

Choose a browser extension for meeting subtitles

A subtitle extension may work in a browser meeting while doing nothing in the desktop app from the same company. That is a capture boundary, not necessarily a broken microphone. Before installing a tool, identify where the meeting runs and whether the extension can receive the audio you need.

Check the exact supported website, browser and audio route in the extension’s current listing. Test with a non-sensitive meeting before depending on it. StreamTranslate’s free Chat Translator handles written chats; it should not be confused with a meeting-audio subtitle extension.

Separate web meetings from desktop applications

A meeting opened as a browser tab is different from a native Zoom or Teams application. A browser extension’s permissions and capture mechanisms do not automatically reach audio in every desktop program. The provider may offer a separate desktop application with different capabilities and requirements.

The Felo listing, for example, distinguishes browser audio support from its separate desktop-app offering. Read that type of boundary carefully rather than treating a brand name on the page as a guarantee that your particular meeting setup is covered.

Check five details before installing

  1. Confirm the browser and exact meeting website are supported.
  2. Check whether the tool listens to audio, reads existing captions or translates page text.
  3. Verify your spoken and reading languages are included in the relevant feature.
  4. Read current permissions, processing and retention information.
  5. Check plan limits and whether exports or summaries are separate features.

If your workplace manages browser extensions, follow its approved installation process. A public store listing, review score or privacy declaration does not replace your organization’s decision about confidential meeting audio.

Run a test that separates each audio source

Use a short meeting with a colleague and take turns speaking. Confirm that the tool receives the remote participant, your own microphone and any shared presentation audio that you actually need. Some routes handle those inputs differently, so one person’s caption appearing is not a complete test.

Include a pause, a name, a number and a reconnect. Check whether the captions resume without repeating old sentences. If the extension provides a transcript or summary, inspect it separately afterward; a summary is not a substitute for correctly delivered live captions.

Decide whether captions are personal or shared

An extension that adds text to your browser may only help you. Other attendees may see nothing unless they install the tool or the product provides an explicit sharing route. Clarify that before advertising captions in an event invitation.

For shared access, the meeting platform’s own caption controls may be the better starting point. Check its licensing and attendee support. If you are producing an external livestream, an OBS caption composition is another workflow, but it does not automatically become a native subtitle track in the meeting itself.

Use StreamTranslate for the input it supports

Chat Translator is for supported written messages and reply drafts. Watch Party is a separate Elite feature that captures supported desktop tab audio and shows translated speech in Control. Neither should be described as a universal meeting extension or an automatically joining meeting bot.

If a permitted browser audio workflow fits your task, test it using the documented tab-sharing controls. Keep the meeting and captions visible where you can read them, and stop capture when finished. Do not route confidential conversations through an additional service without checking the meeting’s applicable permissions and data requirements.

Quick answers

Why does an extension work in a web meeting but not the desktop app?

They are different capture environments. Check whether the provider offers and supports a separate desktop application for that meeting software.

Will every attendee see my extension’s captions?

Not necessarily. Personal display and shared meeting captions are different features. Test from another attendee’s account before promising shared access.

Is StreamTranslate Chat Translator a meeting-audio extension?

No. It translates supported written chats and reply drafts. Audio translation uses a separate documented input workflow.
