Desktop audio translation

Translate the speech playing in a browser tab.

A video playing in your browser is an audio source, not a microphone. To translate its speech cleanly, capture that tab directly rather than turning up speakers and hoping a room microphone hears enough. StreamTranslate’s Watch Party mode provides a documented desktop route.

With Elite, open Control, choose the source and subtitle languages, select Watch Party and share the playing browser tab with Share tab audio enabled. Translated captions appear in Control. Keep the source tab and Control open, then use Stop translating when finished.

Choose the right type of translation tool

Browser audio translators differ in the sources they capture and where they display text. The Speech Translator store listing describes an extension with several capture and output options. StreamTranslate Watch Party has a narrower documented route: supported desktop tab audio, with captions displayed in Control.

Choose based on the task. A browser page translating written chat is not listening to speech. A subtitle-translation extension may require an existing caption track. A microphone tool may hear your room instead of the media. Watch Party transcribes the audio shared from the selected tab; it does not depend on the broadcaster installing StreamTranslate’s Twitch extension.

Set up the sharing dialog carefully

  1. Open permitted content in its own browser tab and confirm that you can hear it normally.
  2. Sign into an Elite account and open StreamTranslate Control.
  3. Choose I Speak for the media’s spoken language and Subtitles In for your preferred reading language.
  4. Select Watch Party, then Choose tab & translate.
  5. Select Tab in the browser dialog, choose the content tab, enable Share tab audio and press Share.

Do not select a whole screen or window simply because the video is visible there. That selection can omit the tab audio this workflow needs. Use desktop Chrome if your browser does not offer the required tab-sharing option.

Check the first minute before a long session

Start with clear speech and confirm the captions follow the selected content rather than another open tab. Read a few complete sentences, including a name or number. If the source language is incorrect, fix that before judging translation quality. Loud music, multiple speakers and unfamiliar terminology can make recognition harder.

Keep the media and Control visible in separate windows or use your normal window arrangement. Watch Party does not promise an always-on-top operating-system subtitle strip. If you intend to put these captions on your own broadcast, configure a Browser Source separately and confirm permission to use the underlying content. Personal listening and rebroadcasting are different decisions.

Resolve silence, restrictions and changed sources

If the video is audible but no text arrives, confirm the correct tab is shared, its audio is not muted and audio sharing was enabled. Stop and repeat the selection when necessary. A content-protected player may allow playback while blocking capture; this feature does not bypass access controls or guarantee compatibility with every service.

After moving to a different source tab, deliberately choose the new capture source rather than assuming translation follows your active browser tab. When done, press Stop translating. Switch back to Your microphone if your next task is captioning your own speech. For a saved file that needs edited subtitles and a downloadable result, use the separate recorded-video workflow.

Quick answers

Do I install the Chat Translator extension for this?

No. Watch Party uses browser tab-audio sharing in Control and requires Elite. Chat Translator is a separate free tool for written chat and reply drafts.

Can it capture my entire desktop or phone apps?

The documented route is supported desktop browser tab audio. Do not assume operating-system-wide capture, native mobile cross-app access or an offline translation mode.

Does the original video need subtitles already?

No existing caption track is required for the documented shared-audio route. The browser must still be able to share the playing audio, and automated recognition can make mistakes.
