Video localization formats

Choose what translation should change in your video.

A translated video can keep its original voice with new subtitles, replace the speech with another language, or alter mouth movements to match new audio. These are different deliverables. Decide which one you need before selecting languages or buying a processing job.

By StreamTranslate · Updated

StreamTranslate’s Video/VOD Translator adds subtitle tracks to uploaded recordings. It does not clone voices, dub speech or change lip movements. Use it when readable translated text is the required result; evaluate a separate voice or lip-sync tool when the soundtrack or face must change.

Define the deliverable rather than the marketing label

Three meanings of video translation
DeliverableWhat changesReview focus
Translated subtitlesText is added while the original speech stays.Meaning, timing, readability and placement.
Dubbed voiceA translated soundtrack replaces or accompanies speech.Voice permission, pronunciation, mixing and pacing.
Lip-synchronized localizationVisible mouth movement is adjusted for new speech.Consent, face continuity and audiovisual quality.

HeyGen’s translator page describes voice and lip-sync features as well as subtitles. Those capabilities should not be inferred from a StreamTranslate subtitle upload. Match the output to the brief, especially when another person expects a dubbed version.

Prepare a useful subtitle job

Start with a recording you are allowed to edit. Listen for missing audio, heavy music or speakers talking over one another. Choose the cleanest available version rather than a repeatedly compressed copy. If only a small passage needs localization, mark that segment so the quoted processing duration reflects your actual task.

In StreamTranslate, upload an accepted video file, select the spoken language and choose up to three subtitle tracks from the 60-language inventory. Decide whether the original-language text should occupy one track. Check placement against faces, presentation text, game interfaces and any captions already present. A subtitle layout is part of the viewing experience, not merely a decorative export setting.

Review the quote and output options

  1. Check the selected duration and language tracks before checkout.
  2. Review the displayed cost: the current tool charges $0.50 plus $0.01 per selected second, rounded up, with a five-second minimum.
  3. Select the subtitle-file option before processing if you need SRT, VTT and a transcript.
  4. Process the job, download the subtitled video and inspect the result.
  5. Keep the approved files in your own storage before the seven-day result availability ends.

Recorded-video processing is separate from live-caption plan hours. A subscription used for your streams should not be assumed to cover this export or any unrelated voice-dubbing service.

Judge the translation as an edited publication

Compare names, numbers and important claims against the original audio. A smooth-looking line can still misrepresent a speaker. Have a target-language reviewer check nuanced sections when the video matters commercially or publicly. Review subtitles at normal speed and on the smallest intended screen, including any vertical crop.

If the brief changes to voice replacement, stop treating subtitle approval as sufficient. Reassess speaker permission and the additional audio and visual review that format needs. For a subtitle-only result, preserve the original soundtrack and make its presence clear to collaborators. This avoids delivering a technically valid file that solves a different localization task from the one requested.

Quick answers

Will StreamTranslate preserve my voice in another language?

It preserves the original audio while adding subtitles. It does not generate a translated imitation of your voice or provide a voice-cloning export.

Can I get subtitle files as well as visible text?

Select the subtitle-file option before processing for SRT, VTT and a written transcript alongside the rendered video. Confirm the job options before checkout.

Which approach is better for a short clip?

Choose based on the audience and brief. Subtitles retain the original performance, while dubbing changes listening; neither format removes the need to review meaning and timing.
