IRL Pro live subtitles with OBS

Use IRL Pro with an OBS receiver and the StreamTranslate audio plugin to caption the received phone feed. This keeps video delivery in your existing IRL setup and separates it from translated-caption processing.

What you need

  • IRL Pro on Android and a working feed received by home or Cloud OBS.
  • The StreamTranslate audio plugin installed where OBS runs.
  • A StreamTranslate account and either a Browser Source or linked Twitch Extension.

Use the account and URLs for the same environment. A staging caption feed does not appear in the released Twitch Extension unless the test channel is deliberately connected to staging.

Choose your caption output

Twitch Extension: each viewer chooses their language and appearance. Keep your Twitch account linked and the Extension active on your channel.

Browser Source: you choose the language, colors and appearance in Control. The captions are included in your video for everyone.

Do not activate two audio capture routes for the same voice. The Browser Source URL is for display; the RTMP URL or OBS plugin supplies audio.

Setup steps

  1. Keep the ordinary IRL Pro connection

Use the protocol and destination expected by your OBS or relay receiver. RTMP and SRT settings must match that receiver; an SRTLA connection needs a compatible bonding receiver.

  2. Confirm OBS receives sound

Start IRL Pro and check the received source’s audio meter in OBS. Fix this feed before adding captions if no sound reaches the receiver.

  3. Attach the StreamTranslate filter

Open the incoming audio source’s Filters menu. Add StreamTranslate and paste the key after /live/ from your Control IRL Mode URL.

  4. Choose Extension or Browser Source

Link your Twitch account for personalized Extension captions. For captions in the video, add your overlay URL to OBS and choose Translate To in Control.

  5. Check the stream as a viewer

Speak a few full sentences, switch language and check recovery after a brief phone disconnect. Verify captions restart with the incoming audio.

RTMP versus bonded input

Our public caption endpoint is RTMP. Do not paste its address into an SRT or SRTLA field. Your own receiver can handle those protocols and supply audio to OBS.

A direct RTMP caption destination can be evaluated separately if your IRL Pro version offers the required additional output. Keep the usual video destination active; publishing only to the caption service does not put your channel live.

The OBS receiver route also suits existing cloud and backpack setups. The capture method is the audio plugin, not a phone app installed inside the Twitch Extension.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send SRTLA directly to the caption URL?

No. The public caption URL accepts RTMP. Receive SRTLA with a compatible external relay, then use the received audio in OBS.

Do I need an Android phone?

IRL Pro is an Android app. The OBS receiver can be on another supported computer or cloud server.

Do I need to leave the Control microphone running?

No. In IRL Mode, audio comes from your RTMP destination or the OBS audio plugin. Use Control to change settings; do not start a second browser microphone session.

Who chooses the subtitle language?

With the Twitch Extension, each viewer chooses their own language and appearance. With a Browser Source, you choose the language and appearance in Control and viewers see those captions in your video.

How should I adjust caption timing?

For Twitch Extension viewers, internal testing found 3–5 seconds is the sweet spot. Adjust to your actual video delay. This setting does not delay a Browser Source composited into your broadcast.
